The BBC will mark a quarter-century since the debut of The Office with a special edition of Remembers, celebrating one of the most influential and acclaimed British comedies ever made.
Created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office first aired in 2001 and transformed the sitcom landscape with its mockumentary format, awkward humour and unforgettable characters. Set in the Slough offices of paper merchant Wernham Hogg, the series became a cultural phenomenon, spawning international remakes and inspiring a generation of comedy writers and performers.
To celebrate the milestone, stars Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook — who played Tim Canterbury and Gareth Keenan — reunite to share memories from the show’s creation and success. The special marks the first time the pair have seen each other in more than 15 years.
During the programme, Freeman and Crook reflect on working alongside Gervais, Merchant and co-star Lucy Davis, who played Dawn Tinsley. They also reveal behind-the-scenes anecdotes, including how Freeman originally auditioned for the role of Gareth, Crook’s commitment to one of television’s most infamous hairstyles, and how Gervais frequently threatened to derail filming with laughter.
The actors also discuss the height of “Office-mania”, revisit some of their favourite Wernham Hogg moments and share their thoughts on the hugely successful American adaptation of the series.
Mackenzie Crook and Martin Freeman Remember... The Office will air on BBC Two and iPlayer on 8 July at 10pm.
